Absorbing the moguls is when your knees come up to your chest and back down to minimize the jerk on your upper body. For some really good example of absorption (and good skiing in general) check out our videos section.
To absorb the moguls, you must first approach the mogul with the correct body position; that means hands in front, looking down the hill and your shins pressing up against the front of your boots. Once you have this you are ready to absorb some moguls!
Absorbing the moguls early is important, so begin the whole process when the tips of your skis reach the beginning of the mogul.
Once your reach the mogul, let your feet come up towards you chest similar to the position of sitting in a chair. It may seem weird, but skiing moguls is like standing up, sitting down, standing up, etc. Practice this until you have a good range of motion, that means your knees should be able to bend and your feet come up and then push them back down.
Once your knees are up and you’re on top of the bump, you need to push your feet down and return to a tall position. It is also important to “drive” the tips of your skis down the backside of the mogul so that someone standing below you doesn’t see the bottom of your skis. This may be hard at first, but it is an important quality of a good mogul skier.
Keep practicing this over and over again until you get the hang of it. Don’t be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and let your knees come up as high as they need to. Over time, try to incorporate this into your mogul skiing, but don’t let it get you “backseat” or skiing on your heels instead of the balls of your feet. Good luck! Last year at the tender age of 60 I decided to be intimidated no more by moguls. I took a lesson and looked on line at the tutorials, and of course practiced every chance I got. Today, at 61 I am enjoying a whole new level of skiing and am enjoying the sport more than ever before. Thanks to the internet and tutorials like yours the old dog is off the porch.
i just cant get it, i know its only my second season but i can do any terrain any condition BUT moguls… especially ant large ones. I just loose control and start going faster and faster. i can absorb but i cant stop, so i end up falling and rolling down the hill all the time. So, id appreciate advice on hoe to control the speed on moguls…and yes i watched whole bunch of videos on how to do that but it just doesnt work in practice…????
thank you
No problem, just try making rounder, less direct turns and try harder to keep your feet underneath you and don’t let them get out in front of you. Hope this helps!
Exactly, I agree with the other reply. also, try pulling your skis under your butt as much as you can on the downhill side of the mogul. You will allow your legs to return to a controlled position, slow your speed, and this action also causes the natural tendency to point your tips into the troughs, which is ideal. Hope this helps and have fun on the slopes bro!
I am 13 years old and this winter I became very inspired by watching a 13 year old at a mogul competition. I would like to give mogul skiing a try. I am okay in the moguls but I have had no training at all in what my form should be. Also I am just a beginner on jumps. I’m thinking about joining a team next season to help me develop my skiing. Do you have any advice for me? If so please e-mail me at jd7105@yahoo.com. Thanks for your time!
Sure, I would definitely join the Freestyle Team! It’s great fun and you can really improve your skiing. For advice, I’d start working on absorption, staying forward and start learning some 360′s. Hope this helps!
Hi, i have a similar question. i heard that one can enter the ski team by submitting a video of themself skiing. is this true? and where is it submitted? also, how good must one be to do this…obviously general expert level, but HOW good? thanx!
It depends on where you live and what team you want to join, but I think the video is ridiculous. Just go to their website or office and ask about the ski team. No matter your skill, I’m sure they’d love to have you and would put you on an appropriate level team. Good luck!
ok thanks! im in USA btw, so ide just go to that site then. i thought one had to be of a certain skill level but i guess that was just a misconception. thanks again
Hi. I am 14 and have been skiing moguls forever. i follow all the rules and tips and just cease to look good. i absorb as much as i can and even drop below my knees but when i watch a video of myself, my knees dont look like they are coming up at all. i keep my hands out in front but my hand positioning and pole planting looks terrible when i look back at it. i just want to look more like the pros, but cant seem to get any closer to it! any advice??
I would work on reaching for the backside of the mogul with your pole plants and practicing a good knee roll. For knee roll, roll both your knees from side to side to initiate the turn and get on an edge. That should help you stay more forward and make it easier to have good absorption.
Ive watched a video on youtube.com called “Mogul Skiing- Deer Valley II” (or something like tht) and it seems like their skis come off the snow a little. is this okay if you want to gain a little bit of speed?
Sure, it’s okay if they come off a little, but try to keep ski to snow contact as much as possible. As you go faster, practice absorbing lower down on the mogul, upper if you need to go slower. I hope this helps.

Thanks a lot Admin! Tried it today; discovered a huge difference! thanks again
